How to Create a Bill of Materials (BOM)
The Bill of Materials (BOM) feature allows users to define which components are required to manufacture, assemble, kit, or bundle a finished product.
A BOM simply creates the relationship between a finished product and its components.
Creating or editing a BOM does not change inventory quantities. Inventory is only updated when a Manufacturing Order is completed.
Understanding Finished Products and Components
There are two types of items involved in manufacturing:
Finished Product
The final product that will be manufactured, assembled, sold, or stocked.
Examples:
- Bicycle
- Gift Basket
- Computer
- HVAC Installation Kit
- Furniture Set
Component
The materials, parts, or products required to create the finished product.
Examples for a Bicycle:
- Frame
- Wheel
- Tire
- Seat
- Handlebar
Both the finished product and all components must already exist as items in C2W Inventory before creating the BOM.
Before You Start
Before creating a BOM, make sure:
- The finished product has been created as an item.
- All component items have been created as items.
- The required quantities for each component are known.
If the items do not already exist, create them first from: Inventory → New Item

Add Components to the BOM
Example BOM:
Finished Product | Component | Quantity Required |

Edit a BOM
To change the quantity of a component:
Changes will apply to future Manufacturing Orders created after the update.
Remove Components from a BOM

What Happens to Inventory?
Creating a BOM: Creates the relationship between products and components.
Creating a BOM does not:
- Increase finished product inventory.
- Decrease component inventory.
- Reserve inventory.
- Create inventory movements.
Inventory changes only occur when a Manufacturing Order is completed.
When Will Inventory Change?
Inventory changes occur when a Manufacturing Order is completed:
- Finished product quantity increases.
- Component quantities decrease.
- Inventory movements are recorded automatically.

Complete a Manufacturing Order for 5 bicycles.
After completion:
